ALWAYS CAFFEINATED
Hand Sand Hands 8/30/14

Americans… as I sit here I’m mastering a record by local Athenian Jonathan Miller AKA Hand Sand Hands… It’s a pushed to the limits, more home-made mash up of the repetitive mechanical agression of “With Teeth” era NIN, with the simplicity of Portishead 3’s vocal and synth melodies laid over top.  Each track of the record starts out with a simple looped and cut drum arrangement or a sample of a single instrument cut up to create a base from which he builds and elaborates with synthesizers, loops and other vocal and instrument samples.  The tracks slowly build from front to back into a behemoth distorted drum and bass head nodding euphoria with the simple clean and melodic vocal arrangements keeping the aggression of the loops at bay.  This record is loud crisp and distorted and I am trying to keep it that way and in such a way that it is not harsh to listen to.  About a dB and a half from the tube Pendulum Variable Mu tops and a few dB of Pultec style Shelf Cut from 1k down to clear out the mud and murk on the Massive Passive are the starting points… More to come once I hit phase 2 in a day or two….
